    When we lived back in Pennsylvania, we always hosted Christmas Eve. The night was full of savory and sweet treats, laughs, and love. Liam and I always had games at the ready to make the evening more memorable, and let me tell you, it did! Some of our best family memories were made right there, in that tiny living room.

    We won't be going home this holiday, so we're creating new memories and fun to go with our new home. We just got two board games from Rooster Fin Games. However, we couldn't wait until Christmas Eve to try them out. And when you see them, you're going to want to get in on these too!

Ninja Squirrels

    There's a good reason this fast paced family board game has won so many awards. That's because it's so much fun to play! Ninja Squirrels are fighters. Fast food fighters that is! In this game, players battle over being the first to collect their color of acorns and fill their dens for winter. 

    The game says for seven and up, but if younger kids know their colors (and won't put the acorns in their mouth,) then they could certainly join in! As a mom, I love how this game isn't just a blast to play, but it's a great way for players to work on their fine motor skills. Even better, kids think they're just playing, and don't realize that they're working on those skills. 

Rooster Race

    Rooster Race is another engaging and enjoyable game from Rooster Fin. In this game, players race to be the winner with the most corn, by guessing if they card they draw will be higher or lower than the face up card. If the player guesses correctly, they get an ear of corn. Guess wrong, and lose an ear. (If kids can count to fifteen, then they too can play!) When all cards are played, the person with the most ears of corn is the winner!

    Again, this game isn't just a blast to play, but it helps kids to work on fine motor skills, as well as number recognition. In my opinion, this makes these titles from Rooster Fin not just a perfect gift for families, but for classrooms too! I can see them being utilized in libraries, child care centers, therapy clinics, and so much more. So gather your family and friends, and make some memories!

Water Balloons Just Got an Upgrade

     Water balloons are great summer fun. However, they're messy, and really not great for the planet. But that's okay, because these water balloons just got an upgrade. They're quick and easy to make, and your kids are going to love them.

    I've been wanting to crochet for years. As a kid, my great gran and gram taught us to make chains, but that was all I could ever do. This past March I finally decided it was time to learn. So for my birthday I got some hooks and a few skeins of yarn, turned to YouTube, and I've been "hooking" ever since. 

    A few days ago I discovered a tutorial for reusable water balloons. I was immediately hooked. Think about it. No filling balloons, no little pieces of breakage, and a fun project to crochet. I immediately went through my yarn stash and got started.

Why Crochet Water Balloons?

    I don't know about you, but I've long been discouraging my son from playing with water balloons. First of all, it takes me an hour to fill them, and takes the kids about five to ten minutes to break them all. That's not cool. Secondly, they leave little piece all over the yard. That's not good for our fur babies, our Earth. The kids never want to pick them up, and I sure as heck don't want to. Third, these reusable water balloons are so much better for our planet. So this tutorial is a win win.

How Do They Work?

    It's simple really. Get a bucket or two of water. (You can use them in the pool, the lake, or even the creek like us!) Place the crochet balloons in the bucket(s) and press them down in. Get them good and soaked. Now step back and let the kids have a blast. That's it! 

    When they're done, wring them out and hang to dry. You can wash and dry them in your machines too. Which makes them perfect for families. They would make a fantastic gift too! These balloons would be a wonderful way for kids to work on fine motor skills, while having fun at the same time! I love play therapy!

I'm Hooked, Let's Make Some

    I know by now you're just as hooked on this idea as I am. So grab your 9mm crochet hook, and some Bernat Blanket Yarn. This is key for a few reasons. It holds more water. They suck up the water, but don't retain it in their fibers. They also crochet up quickly. I made six for this post in just over an hour. 

    I only made six, because I used the Bernat Blanket Yarn I had on hand. However, we're headed to Walmart this week, and I will purchasing some bright and fun colors to make more. Now that I have you hooked on this amazing idea, here's the YouTube video by Left in Knots, that started it all! Enjoy! If you make some, come back and share some pics!

    We all know that April Showers bring May Flowers. However, after being cooped up all winter, being stuck inside on a rainy day in the spring is no fun! How about doing something fun and creative to pass the time?

    I'm always on the lookout for fun projects to keep Liam and I both entertained on a cruddy day. I recently came across this 5D Diamond Painting Kit featuring my favorite Van Gogh painting, A Starry Night.

     It's supposed to rain tomorrow, and Liam is actually excited about it. He can't wait to get started on our "starry painting!" Turn a boring and drab day into a memory to last forever. You or your kids will enjoy creating this wonderful piece of art. You may want to grab more than one because you won't want to just sit back and watch. 

Paint by Number Got an Upgrade

    I always loved doing paint by number paintings when I was a kid, and I still love them today. However, they have now been upgraded! The 5D Diamond Painting kit doesn't actually use paint at all. Instead you're placing 2.8 millimeter beads all over the image.

    Each color is numbered, so all you need to do is place it on the corresponding number on the painting. It's less messy, and more fun! As a special needs mom, I think it's great therapy fun! Your child will be passing time on a rainy day and enjoying this project, all the while working on fine motor skills, and hand eye coordination. It's a win win for special families! 

Easy and Relaxing

    This kit comes with everything you need to create a one of a kind, beautiful piece of art. Simply put a little wax on the end of the pen, pick up each bead, one by one, and place it on the corresponding number on the image. (The canvas comes covered in the adhesive to make them stick.) That's it! When you're all done, you can frame it. Hang it in your own home, or gift it to someone you love.

    We're always on the look out for new games to add to our repertoire. I really love hands on ones that aren't just fun, but also help my son work on things like his fine motor skills, hand eye coordination and so on. That's part of the reason I was happy when I saw the games Liam pulled out of the box. 

    He got Doggy Doo, Let's Go Fishing, and Mr. Bucket. These classic games have been fun for generations of kids, and now your kids can enjoy them too. Doggy Doo is better than ever, so let's break them down!

The All New Doggy Doo

    In all honesty, I never got Liam the original Doggy Doo game because it was too messy. My friend had it for her kids and he played with them, and if you remember the old game, you'll remember the mess. That's no longer an issue because Goliath Games made some much needed changes.

    The all new Doggy Doo game is better than ever, and MESS FREE! You now feed doggy a food pellet that isn't messy and much easier to use! The game also teaches kids responsibility in a funny way. When Doggy Doos they scoop it up with the doo shovel, and place it in the game receptacle. I love how Goliath Games is teaching our kids to clean up after their fur family!

Let's Go Fishin' (Inside!)

    One of our most beloved past times is fishing. However, it's not something we can do at the moment. (Roll on Spring!) Since we can't fish at our favorite ponds, we can now fish right in our living room. Let's Go Fishin' is the classic from our childhood. Cute little fish swim around in the pond, and kids have to catch them on their poles. 

    As it spins the fish open and close their mouths, and kids have to get their poles in there at the right time to land that whopper! It comes with four poles, and hours of fun. 

    This game is perfect for working on their hand eye coordination in a fun and engaging way. It's prefect for the home, classroom, or even therapy clinic. You can also use it to teach your child colors, and simple addition too. But best of all, you can spend time laughing and having fun as a family!

Good Ol' Mr. Bucket!

    Goliath Games and Pressman Toy bring us the classic Mr. Bucket game. Kids chase Mr. Bucket around and try to get all of their colored balls in his mouth. But beware, as he moves, he also spits the balls back out! 

    This game is perfect for getting the sillies and wiggles worked out in kids. (Or as I like to call it, Operation Wear Them Out.) It teaches kids colors, and work on their fine motor skills, as well as their hand eye coordination. However, they just think they're behaving a blast!

    If you're a parent, you know that play is a cornerstone of development in our children's lives. It's how they learn and expand their skills. Give them the tools to create and play, and foster their imagination for a lifetime! In the spirit of this, I have to tell you about some AMAZING books Liam and I recently discovered!

    Sofie and Nate have the coolest activity books to encourage your kids to create more with their building bricks. I instantly fell in love with that idea, because here's what happens in my house. Liam gets a set, we build it, and then in a few months, he takes it apart, and all the pieces go in a tote. Usually he loses the directions, and then just has loose bricks. Liam then struggles with what to build. Enter the activity books from Sofie and Nate. 

"Look mom! Stuff I can build by myself!"

    If you've ever gotten building brick kits, you know that some of those are very hard to build. Some kids with special needs and fine motor skill issues struggle to build such intricate designs. Which is another reason I love these activity books so much.

    Each page shows your child what bricks they need, the color, and how many of each piece. Right there teaches your child simple math and colors. Then it shows them step by step with pictures on where to place the bricks. The designs are simple, yet so much fun!

    We got the PETS book yesterday and Liam couldn't wait to start building. He quickly set to work sorting all of his bricks. If you have a child that loves to pretend cook, then the fruit and veggie book would be perfect for them! 

Not Just for the Home

    These activity books would be an amazing addition to any home. But more than that, I think they'd also be a fantastic addition to schools, and therapy rooms. Occupational therapy was huge with my son when he was younger, and they used to do fun stuff like this with him. Friday Fun for Family Game Night

    In our house Friday is Family Game Night. (We also have other game nights, like if we visit my parents or something, but Friday is ALWAYS game night!) Recently we got a bunch of fun new games from Goliath Games. We want to share them with you and hope you'll join in on the fun, and our Friday Family Game Nights.

Friday Fun for Family Game Night

    Goliath Games sent us four new games, and my son was so excited. When FedEx dropped off a giant box he was flapping for all he was worth! He opened the box and screeched because he saw what was inside. Waiting for him was Pop the Pig, Giggle Wiggle, Jumping Jack, and Build or Boom. Let's break each one down, because they're all amazing!

Jumping Jack is Perfect for Easter or Any Time!

    When Liam first saw Jumping Jack he said, "Look mom! An Easter Bunny game!" This game is adorable. Basically it's a little bunny that could hop off at any time! Each player gets a basket, and you put all of the carrots in the base. On their turn, the player spins, then removes the number of carrots as directed on the spinner. But beware, Jack is waiting to hop off and make your kids giggle! Here's Jumping Jack in action:

(Their reactions were so cute and funny, that I compiled a bunch of them to share. They played Jumping Jack for about an hour, and I could have kept going with the giggles I recorded!)

Pop the Pig

    One of Liam's BFF's big O came up to try out these new Goliath Games. Pop the Pig was his choice to play because he has it at his grandma's. The kids really enjoyed seeing how my the pig could "eat." This one is perfect for kids about four and up. It helps to teach them numbers and counting. As a mom, I love how all of the game pieces fit right inside the pig for easy storage. It also helps minimize the chance of them getting lost. Let's take a look at the boys stuffing the piggy!

Giggle Wiggle

    Okay, so this game is adorable. But more importantly, as a special needs mom, I think it's amazing at working those fine motor skills. If you have a child that struggle with their motor skills, then Giggle Wiggle will be a great addition to your home. (If you work as a therapist then it would be a great tool for your clinic too!) 

     Each player gets a set of marbles and chooses one area of arms to use. You turn on the worm, and the kids have to race to be the first to get all of their colored marbles onto their set of arms. But beware, the worm spins and wiggles! If your marble falls off, you have to pick it up and put it back on. Kids have a blast, and I loved knowing my son was working on his fine motor skills. Build or Boom

    This STEM game helps build analytical thinking and shape recognition. Kids will have fun playing, but you'll feel good knowing their working on expanding much needed skills. 

    The boss is looking for the best and fastest builder. Builders compete by following the blueprint and creating the building. But be careful! When the boom goes off, will your building collapse, or hold up?

    How many of you enjoy family game night? We definitely do, as well as many other families. But did you know that family game nights aren't just fun, but they're GOOD for your kids as well?

    I grew up with family game nights, so of course I couldn't wait to pass that tradition down to my kids. I've always felt it was an important way to bond and have fun together. Then I found out that studies were done and game nights (as well as family dinners,) help your children learn, grow and develop better than those that don't partake in family game nights.

    Since we're big into our family game nights, Tessa pointed out Discovery Toys new Word Flip. When we received it, I knew it was going to be a hit with Liam. To me it's like Scrabble and Hang Man in an easier way to play.

Word Flip is Super Fun!

    It really is. It's also easy to play! The object is to guess the word before other players. Each player rolls the two dice (included) and then you either add, subtract, multiply or divide them to get a number between 0 and 9. You then flip down that number (or you can flip down a combination of two numbers that you have rolled) to reveal a letter (or a blank depending on the length of the word.)

    The first person to guess the word gets the points of the remaining numbers that are left. When the word has been guessed correctly, flip up all of the numbers, then roll up that card and put it in the back to reveal the new word. Word Flip has over 300 hundreds words that will give players varying levels of difficulty.

Spelling, Fine Motor Skills, and More

    As a mom, I love toys and games that do more than just entertain, and Word Flip does much more than that! Playing this game will not only bring your family hours of fun, but it will help expand your children's vocabulary and spelling. Word Flip helps with strategic thinking, strengthens social skills, and helps kids visualize whole from parts. In my opinion it also works those pesky fine motor skills. Flipping the letters, rolling up the next card and even rolling the dice all help kids with their fine motor skills.

Liam saw this and said, "My mama is a ......" :)

Sensory Fun Your Kids are Going to Love

    We have been having a blast this week with some really cool products we just received from Sensory Jungle! We love them and know your kids will too!

Sensory Fun Your Kids are Going to Love

    Liam has always been a huge sensory seeker. There are things he does avoid but that's mainly certain food textures, or sticky things. (For example, he wears rubber gloves to eat apples.) One of his favorite go to toys has always been water beads. He loves watching them change in size and shape as the grow.

    We use them in a pan and he puts his hands and feet in them. I used them to teach him fractions in math too! Just a few measuring cups, and kids can start learning their fractions by seeing how many of the smaller cups it takes to fill the one cup. (See, math can be fun!) He also likes to take them outside and bounce them off the porch to see how high they go. (Note: that's pretty darn high!) Another thing he loves to do is make them and put them in my big bathtub. It's super deep, so he can get in there in his swim trunks and "swim" in the water beads. However, when you purchase your beads from most places, you don't get enough.

    For Christmas, Liam received a water beads play set. You crush the beads, and then mold them into play foods. It's a fun way to work on those fine motor skills. The best part is that our water beads from Sensory Jungle go so much further than other brands. That means, hours, days, weeks, and more of fun sensory play. 

    I put some in a jar and placed them onto a light up base. This made a really pretty sensory light for Liam's room. (It's out of his reach for no chance of breakage.) However, Voss water bottles will work too, and be a safer alternative.

Get Bigger and Better Fun with Sensory Jungle

     That's not the case with Sensory Jungle! For under ten bucks you get over twenty THOUSAND water beads. Get this! You take one tablespoon of beads per gallon of water! So just ONE tablespoon makes a GALLON of pretty big water beads! That's fantastic!! (These are much bigger than the "name brand" ones.)

Bring the Snow Fun INSIDE!

    Snow is so pretty isn't it? We love playing in the snow, but neither of us appreciate the coldness of it. Which is where Still Valley Fake Snow comes in. This stuff is so cool! It's a STEM lesson and sensory play all in one. Water transforms this polymer powder into fluffy snow. It's perfect for a sensory station, and can even be used for crafts. (A 100 grams of Still Valley Fake Snow will make about two gallons of snow.)

    We put ours on a tray and Liam used it to play with his action figures. He loved making a snowy landscape to play in. When he was finished, he scooped it all back up and placed it in bags for another day. (The scooping is a great way for kids to work on those pesky fine motor skills.)

DIY Tee Shirt Wreath

So today I made 2 really cute tee shirt wreaths. They were super simple, and for older kiddos that can tie, they are great fine motor fun!

Here's how I did it......
First, I started I chose some old tees in the colors I wanted. Then I cut them in strips about 5 inches long and about 2 inches wide. When I was all done, I grabbed my hoop and started tying. I went every other color, but really it's up to you. When I was all done with the Halloween wreath, I heated up my hot glue gun and glued on a ghost I had painted and some Halloween rings. That's it. I still need to make a bow to hang it, but I am in need of ribbon.
I can't take credit for this idea however, because I found it on Pinterest. (It's my guilty pleasure :)) Here is the link to that site because I don't want to take credit away from someone else :)
Sassy Sanctuary  Hers is made from fabric scraps, and I totally plan on making one like that, but I wanted to see if I could do one with tee shirts instead. Sure can :) I am waiting to finish the orange and brown on until I get to the Dollar Tree. I want to get a few fake gourds to add to it :)

FINE MOTOR & SCIENCE FUN

Now that all the work is done in LJ's class room, it was time for some fun. Daddy took him fishing yesterday with some friends. He was proud that he was the only one to catch a fish. He also came home with a monarch "callepittar". We put it in the tank and are going to watch the metamorphosis, then release it. (Did you know in our area of the world Monarch's are close to extinct?? Lj said he had to save this one :))
 When the men came back it was time for fun with mommy. While I was on my Pinterest yesterday I found some fun looking science stuff that would also help Liam with his Fine Motor skills. You know me, I love to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. (thank goodness LJ is just learning to read, he HATES that metaphor, he really thinks it means to "kill") So anyway, I got this cool idea from another momma over at The Artful Parent.
Liam really enjoyed it. (NOTE: kiddos hand will get messy, Liam's are still green, as is his face from trying to eat the ice.)

Fine Motor Fun

 Yesterday we had fun making noodle necklaces! Liam has been sick, as have his friends, so it was a nice to make them feel a bit better with some fun. LJ and his friends loved it. It was also great for his fine motor skills, and the pincer grasp. All disguised as fun! What could be better?!?!?!
 We started by dying the pasta the day before. 2 projects out of one is AUSOME!!!! I made a handy dandy pic to explain this process :)

Dying rice is the same way. We love our dyed rice too! (Neon food dyes do give brighter colors. We didn't have any left :/ )

Once the noodles are dry, its time for fun! We waited until the next day to be sure.

We used thick fishing line to string ours. Plastic lanyard would have worked great, but of course Liam got into mine so it was nowhere to be found. The kids made some gorgeous necklaces :)

It was very hot out yesterday, but being the kiddos are sick, they couldn't swim or really get wet. So instead, I broke out the colored cubes, and some watercolor paper, and they went to town making art  :)

To make the ice cubes, simply dye some water, and pour into trays and freeze. Again, the neon dye was brighter and worker better. (blue was the only neon I had left and it worked much better for this)

All in all, we had a blast with our crafts, and Liam worked on motor skills without realizing it. A win win for this momma. Hope you too have as much fun as we did :)
